here's the problem......i bought an ///M shifter knob from bav auto...love the thing....and still do. had no problems with it....but for the past 2 weeks it seems to have gotten loose....
i have the UUC evo3 shifter..and just like the stock shifter...the knob clips on...seems that it clips down nice and tight...but when ever i slam it into second...the shifter knob comes flying off. Now does anybody know if there is anything i can do...or anything i can use to re-enforce the shifter knob down so the it won't have this problem...but the shifter knob would still need to come off at times....so i don't want anything that should keep it down for good....
any ideas would be great.....if worse comes to worse...i'll probably just end up buying another one
anyways....thanks in advance

Might I gently suggest that you stop slamming it into second. Shifting shouldn't be a fight with the shifter. If is is - either something is badly wrong with your shift mechanism, or something is badly wrong with your technique.
You're beating up on your equipment with expected results.

The stock knob does not quot;clipquot; on - it's a simple friction fit, you just push it on until it can't be pushed on any more. I do NOT suggest using a hammer, but to really seat it, some strength is needed. If you're having it come off under normal use (not slamming it into second) - and it does this repeatedly, either your knob is now worn, or the shift-shaft it goes onto is the wrong size. I pretty much doubt that UUC makes an undersized shaft, so I'd guess you have managed to wear the inside of the knob by repeatedly yanking it off and putting it back on.
If it's really loose - you might consider a shot of some silicone caulking on the inside before sliding it on. That should keep it on (once it sets) - but it should also still allow you to take if off, at least once. I've never done this, so it might be totally a bad idea, but you asked for ideas.
i'm guessing it might be worn...and honestly...i do like to have fun with my car once in a while...i don't baby the hell out of it...and usually...going fast consists of me hitting second pretty good....not too rough....
the knob still needs some force to come off...i need to pull it off with some force to get it off the shifter....but when i shift with some force ...it comes off....when shifting normally..it's fine...not loose at all...
i just needed some ideas....not tips on driving......
but i do appreciate the ideas.....thanks
You don't need to slam into second so hard. You can quot;properlyquot; shift the car, and do it just as fast without having your shift knob come flying off.
^^^LOL...it's not like i am shifting as hard as i can...ok..let me re-word....i'm NOT slamming it into second....
say i hit the gas from 1st and i'm at WOT....then i shift to second....when i shift ....the knob comes off.....as easy as that...and remember..i'm at WOT so i'm sure you can imagine how i am shifting at the time....
honestly.....if people has nothing to say to help me out...then don't bother replying to this thread....
Lemme put it this way:
In my 318 with a shift knob that was COMPLETELY loose, as in just sitting there, could pick it up off the shift rod with little to no effort, etc, I was able to shift into second gear VERY fast, without pulling the knob off of the shifter. This means I was pulling straight back on the shifter, and not pulling UP in any way.
So, I think you should learn to not pull UP on the shifter when shifting. The only reason a person pulls up on a shifter when shifting is to use a little more muscle force (muscle is going into pulling up on the shifter, not actually shifting the car, since that motion is straight back). I think people naturally do this in order to get more blood flowing through your body, and get a little more adrenaline flowing. It is a sort of quot;manlyquot; type of thing that I admit, I do sometimes (have since fixed my shift knob problem).
So, like I said before, I think you should take this opportunity to learn to shift properly. If you can shift just as quickly without pulling the shift knob off, then you are going the right direction.

I gotta ask - why are you at WOT? And being at WOT doesn't really make any difference in how you handle the shifter.
I just got back from a drive, and had your question in my head as I was driving.. I realized that I usually use 2-3 fingers to do the 1-2 shift. Even if I was close to redline in 1st.. That's all the effort it takes and yanking it back and upwards with a full hand isn't gonna make the shift any faster.
I do supposed after about 45.. no, make that 50 years of driving stick shift I'd know how to do it, but whatever floats your boat. It's your car.
i really don't care how long you have been driving stick......
but forget it...i've only had 1 idea from this thread.....i didn't plan on getting bashed on for the way i drive....i understand people have their opinion....but jesus....
i guess i'll figure out another way to drive....because apparently i suck
Edit: mods you can go ahead and lock or delete this thread......it's useless
1. Being a jerk usually doesn't endear people to help you.
2. It sounds like you are shifting waaaay too hard.
3. You aren't being quot;bashedquot;, people are telling you why your knob keeps popping off.
4. proper....punctuation....is....a.....good....thing

Actually, the stock does indeed quot;clipquot; on.
It's not the best type of attachment method, and I have one that's better.
See benefits, (besides a foolproof attachment method), are a shorter shifting throw and reduced notchiness.
yea...after driving around today, i tried diff methods of shifting. Everything seemed ok. i am sorry about being a dick though....just been having a really bad few days. Anyways, thanks again to everyone that helped |
