I Told You So (actually you told me so)
Although I was VERY pleased with the looks of 18's on my car I had to take them off. I knew the car would operate differently, but I didn't think that it would be this extreme. I thought that I would be able to live with it, but it really sucked. The car handled worse, had heavier steering, braked worse, and accelerated worse. Plus it added some clutch shudder.
I thank all of you for your previous advice, but I guess I just had to learn on my own.
This is for all people thinking of putting some rims on their car. Stop and think about it.
Mark (with his tail between his legs)
well how about some pics? of course it looked good, but your right, feel and performance is overall decreased. now think of what lighter rims would do....
yah.i feel u. i downsized from 17quot; to a 16quot; light weight wheels...and i think 15 and 16 would look and handle best for miatas
sometimes bigger is not always better..
Glad your quot;discoveryquot; is working out for you. And the part about quot;having to learn on my ownquot;.....we've ALL been there (or at least I have)
That's EXACTLY what I'm thinking about. Looking at the 949 rims. Let me search for the link to my post when I first put the rims on. I can't re-upload them cus I'm on my blackberry.
Here it is: vb/showthread.php?t=330702
Hey Mark, could you touch on the clutch shudder issue you were having? Not sure what the correlation is, but I run 17's on mine and I have an issue of it shuddering going into gear after long freeway rides. First gear only, though.
To skip my blabbering, go straight to quot;long story shortquot; section.
I might have described it incorrectly. Its not really a clutch shudder. Its more that my car shudders like its about to stall upon takeoff. Pretty much its the whole rolling mass thing. With my stockers on a street with no hill I was able to slowly release the clutch (give no gas) and the car would get going with minimal shudder. With the 18's, on a street with no hills, no matter how carefully I released the clutch I would stall.
Long story short: I had to give it more gas so I wouldn't stall with the 18's. It was a PITA on hills.
Hope I helped more then confused.
Mark
OK, gotcha...mine situation's completely unrelated! :-(
I have 17quot; ADR rims, look much like your 18's. Now I'm thinking about the downsize. Hmmmm.
hey Jibs, have you searched about theclutch shudder probelms? This is a known problem on some miatas.
I'm going from 16's to 15's for two reasons
1) ride quality
2) cheaper tires
take a look a 949's 6UL's
Heck I want to go from stock 15's to 14's but don't want to lose the AE look,
I wish they were Gold/Bronze instead of Chrome

yah i feel u.i hate the chrome/polish wheels and i think bronze rims fits 10AE the best.thats why i bought 16quot; bronze wheel set and have them on my 10 AE

I have, but I dont' know exactly if my problem fits others when it comes to what's going on. It's not major, but if it gets worse, I'll have to investigate a little more thoroughly. |
