Ok this is my last resort... before I fill this car full of holes!!!
The saga began 1yr ago, Car began to run rough when cold, spitting and sputtering-better when warm. Took it to a several Mazda dealers and they all said quot;unbalance compression, neeeds Motorquot;
I testted the compression several times, cold warm, with/out extra oil in cylinders. And according to my finding it was ok.
Checked the timing belt and ignition... ok
checked fuel flow....good
I didn't check the fuel pressure at the rail, due to not having the specialized tools,....but than again neither did any of the dealers!!!
So..doubting my own ability... I begrudgingly purchased a Jap motor..
During the intake/exhaust swap I realized the number 1 injector tip was melted. So I used one of the injectors from the Jap motor.
to speed thing up; would not start..... back to another shop...they said verything was ok.....and exhchange the cam sensor and the coil pack.
Ran rough at idle but strong on top end....3 weeks later it runs rough on low rpms and high rpms...PLEase someone help me!!!
what do I doo????
Well, I'll ask the obvious...
plug wires?
here is a small list of things to check.
1. battery grounds make sure they are all good
2. Plug wires and Spark plugs are in spec. Gapped right..
3. Battery is in good order and charged and holds a charge above 12.6 volts
4. Fuel filter is under 30K old or 5 year. this is not a huge deal yet...
5. Intake is clean?
6. Timing is at 10 or 12 or 14
7. no codes from the Computer?
8. computer or ECU was grounded right?
Sounds like you need new NGK Blue plug wires and cheap NGK plugs
Brad
And a new coolant temp sensor ( the one on the back of the head with a two wire connection)
CODES! Sorry to shout, but it's always the first thing to check unless you happen to notice your front crank pulley laying on the ground. How did you check fuel flow without the tools to tap into the fuel rail and check pressures (just curious as I'm not sure how to do that). When's the last time the fuel filter was changed? I'd also have to wonder why the #1 injector was melted on the old engine, that can't help the performance.
Exhaust issues? Is the volume out the back strong and steady or more of a putt-putt, indicating a broken up cat clogging the exhaust.

thanks guys but this may clarify and help me at the same time.
I have a question...
how much putt-putt does the stock exhaust have? my NA putt-putts at idle unless i clear its throat.(short blip of throttle up to 2k- 2500)
i have intermittent hesitation from time to time with my 1991 1.6 NA. everyone always suggests plugs n wires. the PO just changed them. im swapping them over anyway to ngk blues. but when i was chatting with my friend who is the PO, i explained my hesitation. its way different than what he was having that the new plug wires cured. the difference is that if i clear the little car's throat, the hesitation from idle up never occurs through the acceleration. my first thought was the cat being clogged (or restrictive exhaust in general)... but the hesitation isnt a drivability issue. it is more of an attitude that i proposed was the nature of the lil car. quot;wake it up and it will pull hard. if you dont clear its throat, it may hesitatequot;, that is the saying i tell my passengers.
so do i need to swap out the exhaust? if you guys say so, it justifies me getting custom exhaust... hehe |
