building a d16y8 for my 91 hatch

Ive bought a d16y8 to throw in my hatch, but the bottom end needs rebuilding. i got the head and block in the same deal but they were from different motors - the head is in absolute perfect shape. Ive been quoted anywhere from $300-$400 from the local parts shops for a quot;re-ringquot; kit - which consists of piston rings, bearings, gaskets, seals, and timing belt. i was wondering if this is a typical quote and if so why the hell is it so high?? would it be cheaper for me to piece it together? i thought i could get rings for $60, bearings for around $40, and geadgasket and the rest for around $100. also does anyone have any other tips when building this motor? ive heard someone talk about dremeling the oil passages to increase flow to the #1 and #2 cylinders. does this really help any? thanks in advance!
I don't know man, I bought my complete y8 motor for 300 bux with 90,000 on it.  300-400 to re-ring it seems a little high...however, everywhere charges different for their labor.
rings - $70
bearings (rod amp; main) - $130
head gasket - $40
oil pan gasket - $12
rear main seal - $20
timing belt - $40
i'd say thats about the going rate.. 300-400 for a bottom end kit is normal.
but look at it this way.. if you do all the work yourself, you'll have a BRAND NEW block for about $500
yeah i am doing all of the work myself. im kind of wishing now htat i had just bought a complete motor but atleast it will be like putting a new motor in the car. now if i can just figure out if theres a way to make hte bearings last longer ina y8 ill be good to go!
