I have 2002se with Torsen LSD. When I back out of driveway, it does not seem to roll easily. No noise. Is this normal, I dont think I am imagining it. No other problems, just wondering. I have 51K and need to change the fluid, but just have not got to it yet.

The torsen is a geared / torque shifting system, and doesn't rely on clutches or disks or require any special fluid. Put the car on jack stands and while in gear, turn one of the rear tires, the other side should turn in the opposite direction with little effort. Take it out of gear. Turn each tire foreward, then backward. Any difference?
If you feel adventerous, and the jack stands are really secure. Start the car, put it in gear and slowly let the clutch out in first. Then slowly stop, shift into reverse and let the clutch out. Is there a difference? If so, let it run in reverse for a minute or two. Shut off the car, and carefully feel the brakes to see it they may be draggin in reverse. If they are, they could be hot.
If you are moving in a straight line the differential has no effect on the turning of the wheels.
Check your tire pressure.
So long as you are going straight you a LSD should feel the same as an open dif. However, if you have a gravel drive or are turning you might feel the LSD. The Torsens are somewhat sensitive to oil and can be quot;stiffquot; before the oil gets up to operating temperature.
Steve,
The Torsen does work on friction and quot;clutchesquot; but the clutching mechanism is just much different than something with clutch plates. The quot;clutching mechanismquot; is the outer gears being thrust into their gear pockets by the spreading force of the gear teeth. Also, some versions of the Torsen do have springs that preload the friction parts of the dif and thus, like a clutch pack dif will cause both wheels to sping forwards. Also, some clutch pack difs use the spreading force of the bevel gears of a conventional dif to engage the clutches. Thus those clutch difs will spin the wheels in opposite directions. Both the original type one difs and the later Quaife like type 2 difs are susceptible to changes in oil properties.

Cold gear oil. Try backing out of the driveway immediately after you get home from a drive. The oil will be hot. See if the issue has gone away. |
