I currently own a 92 Sunburst as a daily driver. Looking at getting a NC--preferably the Competition Yellow or White. Do you NC owners think I will like the new car enough to sell the older one? I really love driving the the 92 but modern car conviences like power windows and an easily dropped top sound really good. If you have had or have both, please chime in with some feedback.
I have had an NA, NB and NC. The NC is by far a much better car. Better ride quality and handles as good for the type of driving that I do.
I'm sure a lot of NA owners would love adding a NC to their collection, I know I would. But being in college the $2k NA fits the bill a little better than a $15k+ NC. I'm sure it is a better car, but is it (15/2) 7.5x better. I don't think so. Some may not like my logic but when you are tight on cash it makes sense. Once I'm out of school I would love to have one of each generation. I think they are each great in their own respect. Why not save a little more and keep the 92 and get a NC? The money you get back for the 92 will probably not replace the empty feeling it will leave you with. =P Good luck.
Just bought an '09 NC GT PRHT after driving my '91 as a daily driver for 18 years. I hated to trade-in the NA, but the NC is amazing in comparison. I love all of the premium features and the added power feels great. Though reluctant at first, I am glad that I got the NC. With all of the hungry dealers out there and the factory cash rebate ($5500 in Canada during Sept) you can get a sweet deal on an NC. Just do it. You won't regret it at all.
I have to agree with NavyLt. I just traded in a beautiful '96M that I've really enjoyed on an 09 GT PRHT, and I love everything about it. It feels a lot peppier, is still delightful to drive, and is incredibly luxurious compared to the quot;oldquot; one.
I loved my NA, but I'm sold on the NC.
Enjoy!
Don
I drove a NC for 15 years, and it has a more quot;on railsquot; feel to it than the NC1 that I'm driving now. There have been reports that the quot;on-railsquot; feeling was improved in the NC2, but I haven't driven one. It is a slightly more detached feel, but the car is feels, drives and is a Miata.
The seating position is very different in the two cars, as you sit higher up in the NA - the beltline is lower. That has been somewhat addressed in the 08 models and later, but still, you sit more quot;in the carquot; with the NC.
For me, I think the NC is terrific. It has more power, more planted, lots of safety upgrades, a much easier top, far superior brakes. There are a bunch of people on here who claim to love Miatas who continually tear into the NC like it doesn't belong in the family, but read some unbiased reviews and the vast number praise the car. Its been on Car and Drivers Top 10 every year of its production, and you can't say that about the NB.
My recommendation is to drive one for longer than a test drive and see what you think.
I'll second Bamp;T's reply above. I drove my NA for 13 years and had the same experience. What I Really like about the NC is the added 20+ horsepower--made it feel like I'm driving a turbocharged NA or NB model. The handling is just a bit detached, but then I've gotten older and like the smoother ride of the NC.

I think it's a question of what you want - and like you, I enjoy the modern touches. I've had all three models and they are all equally fun, but that can be very subjective. Go out and really test drive an NC and see for yourself. Oh yeah, be sure to get the yellow if you decide to go for it...
I had a really nice 91 and bought a new 08 hardtop and owned them at the same time, I like the 08 much better, sold the 91.
OP, you're going to to get different answers to the sort of question you asked, and in the end, you'll rely on your impressions. Drive an NC or two, and make up your own mind. Really, about all anyone can tell you factually is that the NC is a fine automobile and is at least competitive to the NA in areas where the NA is strong.
Get an NB. Similary performance to the NA with some of the creature comforts of the NC.
Plus you can't get a copper red NA - terrific color.

Paint shop has many colors for cars available, for a price.
Recall the first Porsche 924 with Copper paint = really cool!

NB has good looks, but I would think the side air bags and larger size of the NC makes for a safer car - though just a guess, as untested. The NB was the tightest inside too - with more room inside for the NC and even the NA in respect to not hitting the steering wheel with the legs due to extra thick seats in the NB. Still have cowl shake in NB and more noise overall. NB claim to fame is that baby Jag look, which was pretty slick. - Loren

Is your $2k trade-in really holding you back from making a decision?
Just go drive one. That will answer all of your questions. (ex NB owner.)
I might sell the 92 Sunburst, but no way I would trade it in. Only 50,000 miles with Hardtop.

Wow! If you have a place to store that car, by all means keep her. Buy the NC and give it a month or two before any consideration to sell the NA. Seems like the '92 is a keeper!
If there is any possible way to keep the old, while enjoying the new car, I hope find it. - Loren

Yeah. Sorry if my post came off as smug, but lf you have the room, keep the 1g. Otherwise, report back what they offer you for a 17 year old 4-cylinder Mazda. (Im in the same boat with a different car.)

I'll be blunt with you and say that you should keep that '92 Sunburst. I've had my '94 as a DD since 10/06, and I've never looked back. Yes, I've made mods to my car to make it more quot;track friendlyquot; but I still can't keep my hands off it as a DD. I drove a new NC when I had the chance, and I was NOT impressed. Compared to my car, the stock NC drove like a '73 Buick Electra 225. Also, the driving position is a world apart from the NA - and not an improvement for me (but I'm 5'4quot;).
However, I've since driven an NC with a fully-revised suspension. Yes, it felt very planted, and the power was VERY nice, BUT it didn't have that nimble quot;go-kartquot; feel that I love about my NA.
YMMV, but I'd keep the 50K Sunburst... you're a lucky dawg...

I replaced my 10AE w/ an '08 GT. No comparison, the '08 is a huge improvement in almost every way ex. the suspension tuning, which was easily fixed.
I had a stock '92 that I bought new and drove for 16 years. When it was time for a new car, I tried to like the NC-- really I did.
In general I found the NC a lot more cramped than the NA. I test drove a 2007 and didn't like it very mucn. I drove 2 2008 models-- a regular soft top and a PRHT. I liked the PRHT better than the soft top, but I still didn't feel as comfortable in the NC as I did in the NA. I did like the 2008 better than the 2007.
I also like the styling of the NA much more than the NC. Unlike the OP I don't care about the modern conveniences.
If I could have bought another new NA last year, I would have.
NA is more fun to drive - short distances. NC is more comfortable to drive, especially on trips over an hour in length. NC is more roomy for tall people and has more power. NA is definitely tighter on the curves and feels much lighter.
Initially, I thought the NC lacked the handling characteristics my NA had, but after two seasons, (it's stored for the winter), and 12 K later, I've learned the NC is just as capable and agile as my NA. I just had to get used to the NC's differences.
Despite the differences, the NC still feels like a Miata and will probably give you the same joy as your NA. I don't miss my NA at all.
I had the same problem and decided to hang on to my NA as long as I can - see my avatar. Now that I've put 22,000 km on the car over about 8 months of driving, and had a good wheel alignment done, I'm getting to know the great qualities of the NC. The NA sitting on my driveway is getting used less and less.
The NA and NC are like two completely different cars, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Hang on to your '92 until you feel you can let it go without it tugging at your heartstrings. |
