Do I need to balance my autocross wheels?
See title.
I am going to have a set of V710s (R-Compounds) mounted tomorrow morning, on some stock NB 14quot; wheels. Since I'm using these tires for autocross (Under 65mph), is it really essential that I have these tires balanced? I'm thinking about just forgoing it to save some cash.
Advice appreciated, thanks!
Are you mounting the wheel on your own or are you taking them to a shop. I think the shops always balance the wheel for you. But if you don't ask the shop, they might not balance the wheels to the point where they won't shake on a miata.
I never balance wheels with R-comps on them for autocross. I currently have three sets of Kumho V710's mounted up for autocrossing, none were balanced. Haven't felt a need for it in the ten years I've been driving around cones in parking lots. I always specifically tell them not to balance them.
Thanks for the input guys
What about if I were to occasionally hit the track? Balancing a good idea then? (Its not likely but I thought I'd ask)

Yes for the track.
I bought one of these a few years ago and it has paid for itself at least 3 times over.

If you buy one, remember to quot;balance the balancerquot; so the bubble is perfectly centered by squeezing a wheel weight to the lower rim of the thing. Also never add weights to the inside of the rim. This is probably the leading cause of wheel wobble. Think about it! Here's a little hint, wheel offset!
Your logic for not balancing your wheels is bizarre IMO.

How is wanting to save money bizarre logic? In this day and age, it is some of the most sensible logic you can come up with. It simply isn't needed for R-comps for autocrossing. |
