I've been having a mis-fire problem with my car and every once in a while I'll hear a pop come through the speakers. Today I was running pretty hard and reved 2nd gear to about 6,000 and heard a loud pop followed by no music, a loud thumping sound, and a high pitched whine that is rev related. The thumping and whining sound are very loud and not controled by the volume knob. The amp is a Soundstream TRA 680.

Did you wire this yourself? If you are having those problems with your amp that are quot;rev relatedquot; you have an issue with your alternator. Possibly throwing out voltage spikes?? If you have an accurate fuse rating on your amplifier power wire, I think you should be fine though.
Typically alternator whine comes from a suspect or dirty ground wire or when you run your signal and power wires too close together. Or for that matter, when you put your signal wire too close to any power lead.

I only started hearing this whine after the lound pop. As soon as i turn on the headunit now i get a very loud thumping, high pitch whine, and no music. there was no rev related noise before the loud pop.

A fused power wire is to protect from current draw ...not high voltage. You could wire the amp to a 120v outlet and the fuse would not blow until you reached a draw greater than the rating of the fuse.

I tried a bunch of thing tonight and I#8217;m still getting the noise. I switched out the amp, pulled the head unit and everything looks ok, ground wire is still connected, all of the fuses look fine. The noises are very loud; the sub woofers are thumping like crazy. In standby mode there's no noise, select tuner and it waits for the antenna to go up then the noise starts. The headlights and all other accessories are working fine.
Here#8217;s a link to a quick video I made of the sound. this video is with the car running, i get the same sound when the car is not running. Help!!!

nothing???
Since you switched out the amp you have eliminated it. What does it do when you play a CD?

Same thing, the volume on the headunit is at zero. The noise level is related to the amp output level. I can faintly hear the cd, but that is probably because the headunit volume is down. I think the sound is engine noise, high pitch whine through the tweets and mids and very loud thumping from the subs. What would cause all that engine noise? Everything was fine, then the loud POP, then very loud engine noise.
tonight I found evidence that a mouse has been in my car chewing things, so I'll have to check all the wiring to see what's been chewed.

A casual term for that sort of audio sound is quot;motor boatingquot;. It can be the pulsed sound of a low rate electronic oscillation. It's commonly a result of a malfunctioning internal power supply source or of an electrical leakage between internal audio amplification stages. There are many other internal fault possibilities too, as well as external ones, including electrical shorting excessively loading one or more of the audio unit's outputs.
A quick DIY check of an electrical short in an audio output (at least for one that's not been damaged too) is to disconnect all the existing audio output and replace it with another one known to be good. For example, use a substitute speaker for testing speaker level audio, or a high impedance earphone for line level.
Bump; I'm still having the engine noise problem. I haven't messed with it for awhile, but tonight I was trying some different ground points and noticed that if I had my one hand on the amp (while the amp is on) and touch parts of the trunk metal with my other hand I could hear a thump through the speaker. If I tapped the rubber molding around the trunk it also came through the speakers. Touching the outside of the car did nothing.
I also noticed that my mouse friend (now deceased) had chewed a section of tape off of the main wire loom that comes out of the fuse box and runs down under the wiper motor. I can't see any exposed wires, but he probably nicked one or two of them.
Could it be that the whole car has a ground problem? Thanks for any help. |
