The top of my oil dipstick broke off the rubber O ring is still on but the yellow round handle is broke off. 2001 Ls 5 speed Auto parts?? Dealer?? were can I get one made out of metal??
This seems to be a common problem with the Miata. I'm not sure where you can find an aftermarket metal dipstick... but I managed to find an OEM dipstick on ebay for $10 to replace my broken one. $15-25 is the typical going rate from most websites selling OEM dipsticks.
Most are broken, I tried to fix by drilling out the two pieces using a piece of coathanger as dowel with JB weld. It broke again.
Mine broke and I realized the PO had glued it. Bought a used one on ebay.
this is your chance to buy aftermarket
Keep in mind that if you buy a metal one, checking the oil when the engine is hot will be next to impossible without some type of hand protection.
Mine broke years ago. I just left it. I can still pull it out and put it back in.
Somethings are just too little to worry about.

Shop/ViewP...eIndexID=77030
Once glued in place, will stand up to heat and use. Glue not included.
For some reason that just strikes me as hilarious.

haha indeed... The price is insane but that's what the OP asked for.
I bought a replacement from finishline it will be the last one. I'll just live with it being broken when it breaks again.
Just curious, but why are so many of these dipsticks breaking? Mine hasn't broken in the 8 years I've had the car. Is it rough treatment? They can't break on their own. If people are breaking dipstics then what else are they breaking on their cars due to carelessness?
Mine broke years ago. I fixed it with epoxy and a little fiberglass cloth. It lasted 3 or 4 years and broke again. I keep telling myself I'm going to do something about it. But that little nub has to be the lightest solution out there. For those of you that still have a working handle, don't bump it. That's all it takes when the plastic gets old.

The dipstick is right next to the exhaust manifold and made of plastic.. Enough heat cycles and it becomes brittle.
Quit thinking with your Dipstick Midnite. It has nothing to do with carelessness.

I'm a very careful person (my plate reads quot;NRRVOUSquot;)! Mine broke off as I was gently pulling up. I remember wondering how on earth I could have broken this thing. They really do get quite brittle.
Epoxy a washer under the remaining flange. It'll provide enough grip to pull it easily.
$40 for an add-on dip stick handle? You could go through 2.7 OEM dipsticks before you exceed that cost. Would you car last that long?

My '99 California-spec has a metal handled dipstick. No real chance of breaking.
It has the flexible quot;shaftquot;, not the typical flat metal type. Anybody know if they
are all the same length, thus one could use the quot;unbreakablequot; one in all other NBs?

They won't work. the dipstick TUBE is different for CA spec cars and the CA dipstick won't fit into the FED tube..
Just be happy that the CA emissions added ONE good thing to your car
randy f,
That is the one and only, single saving salvation for having a Cal-spec car?
Oh well, I should be glad for even one! Maybe I'll have the dipstick chromed
and take off my hood!

So you're saying that those of us with broken dipstick handles are careless? That's pretty presumptive of you.
Yours may not have broken yet - but it will.

Thanks for the reasonable answer. I suppose that it would get brittle. But then why don't all these dipstick break?
If mine hasn't broken yet then I doubt that it will.

- don't you really mean presumptuous? I guess I was quot;presumptivequot; if the definition of that is quot;giving grounds for reasonable opinion or beliefquot;
quot resumptuousquot; means quot;overstepping due bounds (as of propriety or courtesy) : taking libertiesquot; - maybe my words were a little of that too, but what I actually did was to ask a question and then perhaps made a presumptuous statement.
So sorry if it offended. I know most, particularly those who read and post to these forums are careful about their cars - but you never know - there are some who handle things roughly and perhaps that is happing in some cases.
Thanks for the vocabulary lesson. Your assumption was correct. I meant quot;presumptuousquot;.
The fact of the matter is if you have the plastic dipstick handle it is only a matter of time before it becomes so brittle that it will break with very little effort. It is a well known issue with our cars. I'm glad yours hasn't broken yet and I hope that it doesn't any time soon. But rest assured that it requires no manhandling to break it when it eventually does break.

No - the routing of the 2nd O2 sensor wiriing makes things a bit easier on Cal compared to Fed for '99-'00. |
