Lost Mind, Shifter/ Trans Issues
I have done everything possible to correct the issue, with some decent results.
The problem is extreme notchiness, almost to the point of non-driveable. First I rebuilt the master cylinder and slave cylinder at the same time. Flushed the line with new brake fluid, and bleed it several times.
This improved the original almost un-shiftable trans to somewhat driveable.
Same day I also replaced the trans fluid, and adjusted the slack in the clutch pedal to almost no slack, just enough to verify there was slack.
Shifting is still difficult, more so up than down though. Clutchless shifting is interestingly near impossible except for 3-4. 5 has to be over 65kph or it just won't go, and without the engine on shifting is perhaps marginally easier. I just replaced all the bushings in the shifter except the quot;complexquot; bushing.
I do not have a hole in the slot of the shifter for the bushing to go, and the bushings is too wide for it to fit into the slot. I also filled the turret with gear lube.
I have also watched the clutch fork operate to ensure operation.
Pics can follow if necessary, but I am thinking I have an extra something in the shifter assembly, and I also have 2 pins. Having just driven another Miata this weekend, and it was buttery smooth and reminded me of what I remember a Miata shifting like.
No clutch slip either.
Hope I didn't forget anything. Thanks to anyone who can help with this mess.
What gear lube are you using ? Should be 75W90 , GL4 .
Well, that's a funny story. Currently AMSoil Synchromesh because what was in it was frankly goo, and all the store had was AMSoil Gear lube that was GL-5. I left that in there a week or two, and ordered the Synchromesh. I know I should have ordered their GL-4 lube, but found out too late.
As a seperate note I have 2 extra components in my shifter assembly. I'll have to take pics. One of them is at least 1/2quot; of spacer between the top of the trans and the upper bushing. The bolts go through it and it has a pin on it. Basically the setup looks like it was designed to take a shifter with a taller shaft below the quot;ball.quot;
Maybe I'm not as crazy as I thought.
Browsing Ebay recently yields the fact that the previous installed a short shifter, but obviously a cheap one that does not use the quot;complexquot; bushing on the ball. Not sure this is all of the issues, but it certainly gives me some sort of direction.
Anyone got a spare OEM shifter they want to send to Okinawa?
. Good people there .......
I had one of those and it was so hard to shift my arm would hurt at the end of the day. I had to get a new shifter too. I had a hard time finding one and if you get one for under 50 your doing good. Partsgroup is definitely the place to go. I think that is where I got mine. Or post in the want to buy section.

well looks like you figured it out before i could be of help. I had the exact same problem. Your shifter isn't chrome is it? Your shift boot doesn't say mazdaspeed on it does it? haha yeah
I got a stock shifter for mine. Feels infinitly better. That other shifter was terrible. |
