Before I got my Lab Pup Savannah, (now 7 months old), I had visions of her riding around with me in my Miata with the top down. However, she's, well, how do I say it.....a little exuberant. In other words, she's wild as a buck. We've gone to puppy classes and have now hired a private trainer, but she's a hyper ball of energized Lab and I have not gotten the nerve to put her in my Miata. She's been in our old beater spare car, but not my Miata.
I had already long since prepared for it. I bought a harness to keep her in, however, it does not keep her in one place. She can still move around and I fear she would jump around and scratch my car. I had also bought a seat cover.
Soooo.....my gosh, does not look like I'll get to ride her in my car until she's old and calm. Anyone have any advice? I'd really love to ride her around in my car.

Your lab looks great!
I have two labs--and used to take them hiking every weekend. Then again, that was when I had the Honda Element. I'm just not sure you can fit a lab in the Miata.
Or put another way: can they fit in the car without doing any damage?
For now: we walk to our hiking spot. But still, I would love to hear of some way to transport a lab in the Miata. Hope someone has some ideas!
I have two well mannered labs, old and young, who are not allowed in the garage where I keep my NC, let alone inside the car!
MAYBE, when your dog is over 4 years old, if it is exceptional, it could be trusted in your well kept NC. If you don't care about the car, go ahead!

Oh....I care about my car a GREAT deal!! That's why I've not let her set a paw, or claw, or tooth in it!! hahaha!! Love that car more than ANY car I've ever had. Maybe I'll just buy a golf cart and let her ride in it,......
I love my dogs and I have visions of either one of them riding in the MX-5 with me... but they are dogs and I'm picky about the Miata. So, I pile 'em in my quot;dogquot; car and we all can go that way. Let's face it, the dog's not going to care what car they are in as long as they're with you!
Do you have a second car?
P.S. - I love how quot;our Wheelsquot; turned into quot;Our Pupquot;.
They come to work with me every day.
That is so cool! Where do you work?

Yes, in looking at my blog, it looks as though I have become obsessed with the dog. haha, I guess I am. Have not posted about my car, our motorhome or our motorcycles in I don't know how long. Amazing....

Not really amazing - dogs do that to people all the time! I should know!

My older one (14 years) LOVES riding in a golf cart.... all that open air to smell!
I just took my 6-yr-old Aussie-Mix in my Miata for a short (test) ride last week! He's about 50 lbs. I put his harness on and buckled it in with the seat belt. That let him sit fairly well, without too much moving around. Of course, he always tries to turn around the wrong way...
He loved being able to sniff in all directions, but didn't really like the harness that much... He couldn't really lie down too well, either, without getting in the way of the shifter.
Sooo... it would work okay for short trips, but not for longer drives. We'll stick with the OTM - Charger - where he has the whole back seat to lounge in!
I've had a puppy (9 months old, JackRussel mix) in the car before. She's a really energetic dog; it's the Jack Russel in her, I assume. She fit easily in the car, and calmed down when we got moving. But her nails scratched the black plastic interior a bit, hair was left everywhere, and drool was hard to clean. Still... it was totally worth it
I have a 3 year old 70# Labradoodle and she is allowed to ride co-pilot in my 08 GT. I purchased a tough material seat cover that slips over the seat easily and I use a small plastic crate designed to sit on the floor footwell. The doodle is large and doesn't fit on the seat too well and sometimes she'll put part of her body on the blanketed plastic crate. She lays down 95% of the time and seems to enjoy the ride. My only concern us her scratching the piano black dash strip.

I am a wine merchant, for lack of a better term. They hang out either inside or in the shade out on the sidewalk infront of the store. Some folks love 'em, and some folks are afraid...
Here are a couple of pics from the DIY Autotune Miata meet yesterday.
BTW The guy on the left of the first pic, looking longingly at my turbo NC, is Paul from Mazmart fame.

I'll bet not too many people mess with you car in the parking lot. Good looking dogs by the way.
Here's a picture of my boy Kramer. He hates to ride in the car and is a Wire Haired Pointing Griffon.
And then there was the time when a German Shepard leaped out of a convertible PT Cruiser in the lane to the left of me and into my lap as I was driving my convertible 'Stang - at more than 20 miles an hour. It bit me in the shoulder, tried to go for my face, and I fought it off until my Mustang bounced off a parked car and slammed into a telephone pole. I was OK, except for the bite, which ripped out quite a chunk of flesh. But the dog somersaulted over the windshield frame and broke its neck. As I staggered out of the wreck, the driver of the PT Cruiser, the dog owner, walked up and punched me in the face.
The Mustang was totaled; I'm driving the Miata NC replacement. My shoulder healed, except for several scars. The dog owner apologized and genuinely tried to make things right. Apparently the dog was very territorial, even on the road.
Belt your dogs in like the OP said he does, or don't take them at all. Not to say that anyone on this thread doesn't do that.
Looks like the forum has gone to the dogs .......................
I love it, the dogs seem to really love it too, perfect color for a wine merchant whatever that is!~

I have a 100lb lab mix that loves taking a ride... sure he slobers all over everything... but its nothing that can't get wiped clean... He loves to sit up and stick his nose over the top of the windshield... he's learned to sit low and brace himself for the curves I also make sure the airbag is turned off for him

You found a plastic crate that will actually sit on the floor footwell and fits a 70# Labradoodle? Please tell me the make and model of the crate. I need one that will sit on the floor.
Actually, it's a plastic storage box like crate and I cut it out in a few spots to fit the floor well. My labradoodle cucls up on the seat with half if her on the crate and half on the seat. I use a blanket over the crate to make it a little easier to lay on. |
