so, i just got my car back from the dealership after fixing my brakes. They said the squeaking/clanking noise i have been hearing is because the subframe on my car has cracked completely through. Now, i have no idea what this means or how it happened.
can someone tell me what this means... and how much it is gonna cost to fix? is it necessary to fix it right away?
thanks,
greg
There are many threads on this - do yourself a favor and simply search on sub frame. You'll find plenty of information (unfortunately).
With a little luck and some serious planning on a "strategy" before you go back to the dealer / BMW, you may get it fixed gratis. Just have a plan, and if you're "young" I'd suggest getting your dad or someone to take this on with you, because it probably won't be easy to get it fixed for nothing, and a mature attitude and a mature stature is going to be necessary to get anywhere...........
Get an estimate from the dealer, and find some high end shops in your area that know how to do frame work as well (I think Turner Motorsports is in your area, they would probably be a great place to go for this repair). Plan to pay for it, and be pleasantly surprised if you get any help from BMW.
sorry and good luck
Damn that sucks. How many miles do you have on your car???
just trade in the car and get a new one....
Did they give you any hint as to going about fixing it, for example them doing it? If they aren't going to cover it, don't have them fix it!
You should have asked them your questions when they told you that your car has issues. Do you have them perform work always and then ask after you pay for it why you were chaged $200 for an oil change?
well... the guy gave me a card of a body shop he suggests, but i think that is kinda sketchy cause the guy that gave it to me (at the BMW dealership) is a jackass. So, i'm going to call them tomorrow anyways and ask for a quote.
But, i was more wondering if any of you had fixed this before... how much it was approx. and if it was covered by warrenty? i think it should be, but i'm not sure...
i have a call into my guy at the BMW dealership i typically go to at home, but i am at school right now. so, hopefully i get a call back from him sometime tomorrow... thanks for all the advice guys, this just sucks.

what would be the point of fixing it, and then trading it for another E46 that can come back and bite you in the ass with subframe damage again?
There are a large range of prices. If you can't BMW to fix it for free, I suggest calling up shops near you to get a price. The labor involved in removing basically everyhting in the rear is what gets you. Run a search on subframe damage, you'll find a lot of threads with tons of info.
If dealer cant fix it. You are in Mass? Check out turnermotorsports and their subframe reinforcement kits and i've heared they do some fixing too. $1000 or less.
