I just bought a 91 miata and the clutch has to be replaced soon. Can somebody explain to me was does OEM replacement mean??? are those OEM replacement clutch mazda certified??
I was looking at a Exedy OEM replacement clutch? Do anybody know if that clutch is mazda certified??
Welcome to the forum.
Take a look at this Mazda kit - tough to beat for the money. (See here.) This may be the Exedy you are looking at.
Also, are you sure the slave cylinder is good? They are a known issue on these cars, but if it's slipping it's slipping. What do you mean by quot;Mazda Certifiedquot;?
I just put that exact clutch in my Miata this weekend. It is made by Excedy and is packaged as Mazda Value Product.
It was only $133 delivered to AZ. You might want to look at all the other things to replace while you've got the trans out.
Good step by step here:
garage/clutch2.html
Also there is a list of things to replace at the bottom.
I got an EXEDY OEM type from one of the e-bay vendors last year...$90 delivered...not a problem after 35k miles...
Had all the same stuff...pressure plate, disc, pilot bearing, throwout bearing and alignment tool
Just did another on a club member's car last month...again, e-bay vendor..$90 delivered...probably the same as others sell..just less money. Shop around...
OEM used to mean Original Equipment Manufacture, which was factory parts. Or parts from the same supplier to the factory, built to the same specs. Now, it's retailer speak for parts that mostly resemble factory parts, of uncertain lineage, manufacturer, and design with likely different materials, details and performance. But Similar! As opposed to 'Performance Parts' or 'economy replacements'?
Using 'search' you can check threads by users of most of the available brands and sellers. Only Mazda labeled packages from dealers or Mazda Motorsports Development are official parts. But some of the ebay and usual aftermarket clutches have excellent word of mouth from users. I doubt any Last as long as the remarkable Miata factory installed clutch, and we don't know what Mazda is packaging for our cars this year. It may be the standard ACT clutch, Exedy or other?
You want a kit with clutch plate, clutch cover (pressure plate), throw out bearing, pilot bearing and it's normal now to get a plastic clutch plate alignment tool. Which looks like and is sized like a transmission input shaft nose, the splined part that you'll be inserting into the bolted in clutch as the transmission is fitted. Don't leave home without one.
Clutch problems with Miatas are often hydraulic system related, not a worn clutch. Try to determine which it is before buying parts and pulling the tranny.
As I recall in previous posts, the components in the Mazda value Clutch kit were very good except for the pilot bearing. A replacement with aftermarket one was suggested.
Any thoughts or recommendations.
Don't forget to replace the rear main seal and transmission input shaft seal.

Correct. Mine was replaced with 75K over that stupid bearing noise. It could have gone for another 50K miles, but I can't stand noisy hardware. I replaced it with the Flying Miata Level 1, Now that clutch is GREAT

excellent to hear that the level 1 is great, mine was shipped today, along with a 10.3lb flywheel. first real performance item I have ordered, but quite a few more planned now that the car is solid.
finally got my clutch replaced... got an oem exedy... plus the shop gave me 12month 12000 miles warranty... and had to replace the slave cylinder..too.. at a not too shabby price..

Mazda OES (original equipment service) clutches are manufactured by Exedy, who also makes (and has made) every factory clutch for every Miata and MX5 from day one. For Exedy aftermarket kits, the TO bearing and pilot bearing are sourced from other companies that may or may not be the same as OEM.
There is no quot;Mazda Certification.quot; If it makes the OP feel better, Mazda OES has chosen Exedy for their clutch supplier. Having the same supplier for OEM and OES isn't always the case, for any auto manufacturer. |
